Vegas And The Mob

Take Jimmy Hoffa and Bugsy Siegel, and Howard Hughes as well, away from Las Vegas and that city might still be a desert town, a country town, perhaps a place where people go to get some peace and quiet, but not the the entertainment capital of the United States that it is today. This city was literally built with blood money from the Italian and Jewish mobs, but also from crooks in organized crime such as Jimmy Hoffa, Sr.

Good business people, whether legitimate characters or crooks, are always looking for the next profit and investment where they can make that next fortune. There was no one in Vegas 80 years ago, a city of perhaps 10,000 people, similar to Bethesda, Maryland, if you are familiar with my area, which was, pre 1970 at least, just a stop on the way to somewhere like Washington or Baltimore, but that started to change in the late 1930s and early 1940s as the mobs discovered Vegas.

That is what you see in this video about the men who built Las Vegas and gave the Southwest and the broader West and even the United States (once the word was out that Vegas was a great place) the opportunity to either lose or make money, but Vegas was also a great place to have a good time just a 4-hour drive from Los Angeles. It gave the State of Nevada a serious revenue source to build its infrastructure, schools, and everything that States need to do well.

  1. Bill Kurtis is simply the best crime show and doc narrator there's ever been. I loved all the stuff he did for a and e back in the day.

    1. He's narrated every single documentary in the known Universe since before time began. 894659 hundred thousand trillion he's done since the start of the year = 10 days and he's probably quadrupled that number by 9000 Billion Zillion since yesterday. That's how many docs he speaks on.
It would take me a week to count that much, it's the biggest number in the world ever. I know all the big numbers.

  2. tony accardo was a great guy…he killed gus greembaum's innocent sister in law to force greenbaum to go back to work instead of finding another qualified mafia casino manager…(around 17 minutes into this video)……im sure finding and / or training a new casino owner would have been difficult…murdering gus greenbaums sister in law was justified…lol…are you kidding me?…what a piece of garbage tony accardo was…beyond human comprehension…..yet accardo was well liked by the fbi and the press…..keep praising tony accardo…a second grade school dropout whos father was a sicilian shoemaker…accardo is mafia royalty who is superior to other mobsters…lol….he is so handsome as well….lol…uglier than sin to top it all off…we all must be living in the matrix

    1. "…(A)ccardo is mafia royalty who is superior to other mobsters…"

He was, not because he was a good guy, but because he never spend a night in prison.
(While being a criminal for 72 years !!)

    2. AGS363 …accardo was caught red handed for tax evasion in the 1960s…he appealed the case and bribed the jurors in the second trial…lmfao…plus when THE RICO LAW CAME INTO EFFECT AND TOOK HOLD AND THE FBI SERVEILLANCE TECHNIQUES BECAME MORE SOPHISTICATED…ACCARDO WAS SEMI RETIRED AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD SO HE WAS NOT ACTIVE ENOUGH WHEN THE FBI GOT SMARTER AND MORE SOPHISTICATED TO GET CAUGHT…MORE CREDIT SHOULD BE GIVEN TO YOUNG MOBSTERS WHO WERE IN THE TRENCHES DURING CHALLENGING TIMES WHO DID NOT GO TO JAIL…LIKE TONY SPILOTRO

    3. We used to call him "Tony Cardigan" because he was always dressed in a nice casual warm cardigan. You can wear it out or go to the Football in it and it keeps you warm on those cool days just before winter. A very sensible and comfortable attire for those chilly nights. Tony liked Wool cardigans in soft colours, when he commuted murder. He didn't want to appear to be a flashy type of person. He had several nice cardigans. Most people only have one or two.

  3. i remember going to vegas in 1983 with my dad.. wow i never in my life had so much fun.. then i went again in 95 and in 2016.. it didnt feel as free as it did back in the days! it felt much safer cleaner and no lie kinda slow and boring.. i found out the mafia ran vegas from the movie CASINO and from watching a history channel documentary on benjamin BUGSY siegal…

    1. It's all been corporatized and sanitized, like everything else in America. They just want you to be quiet little sheep while you spend your dough.

    2. @A.Smith: like everywhere on the world…slowely but surely….comes like a disease over our Planet, called Globalisation. Here in Switzerland we cant even pee at a tree without a ticket from the Police….

  4. The higher you go the crookeder it gets…. The corporate's are connected. Wall st has mob connections. Who d'ya think runs the boiler room scams? The mob invests its ill gotten gains into legit stocks and shares. Remember where ever there is money being made organized crime is not far away. This documentary got all the facts right about Ben Siegel muscling in at the Flamingo.

  5. you ever realize the only difference between the govt and the mob is the govts more powerful every time the mob made money the govt makes the activity illegal then takes it over lottery created by the mob liquor mob ruled during probition gambling vegas mob created mob runI liked it better when the mob ran things unions got contracts the middle class thrived and no coporate cronies dare try to screw the american middle class worker bring back the days of angelou bruno tony ducks carrolo and the man carlo gambino there methods may be a little extreme at times but they truly believed in a free market and there word was bond true men of honor

    1. I agree. It is the government saying it's bad unless we and our friends are making the money. I remember Vegas from the 70s it was family oriented. They make it sound like it's new. I'm sure the old casinos look "old" but all were made to look hi end in Thier period. It's like comparing 1955 Disneyland to 2017 Disneyland both were the best in that time. Of course I haven't seen Disneyland in 30 years, but I assume it has changed a lot, even in 1986 Disneyland had changed a lot from 1955.

    2. Capitalism is being killed by our government.
I also found it entertaining Robert Kennedy went after organized crime, since old man Kennedy was organized crime. I didn't know that, about Robert Kennedy, until this video.

  6. Old days: Mob you lose. 25% of your profit. Don't pay broken bones or death.
Modern times: Government cronies you pay 125% of your profit. Don't pay go to jail, meet Bubba.
Old days roll into town, $10 in your pocket, start a business.
Modern times: it is illegal to make a business unless you pay government 10 years profit first.
    Which is better?
We can't win between the liberals, and the rich. And I don't hate the rich for being rich, just let others make Thier money also.
